Objectives
The objectives of the CPISC Career Focus program are to:
>> increase the supply of highly qualified employees available to the printing and graphic communications industry
>> help transition young people into a rapidly changing labour market with a demand for multi-skilled adaptable employees
Who can apply?
Employers are responsible for preparing and submitting the necessary Career Focus application forms to CPISC. However, recent graduates are encouraged to approach employers about work opportunities and to inform them about the potential to use a wage subsidy to support the graduate’s employment. Any employer whose company is part of the printing and graphic communications sector in Canada is eligible to submit an application to CPISC.
Employers who apply must also be able to demonstrate that:
>> the potential (soon to be hired) employee meets the criteria listed below
>> the potential employee understands and agrees to what is required from them as a participant in the program, including the completion of an agreed learning plan
>> the new employee is guaranteed at least 30 hours of work per week for a minimum 4 month period
Once a Career Focus application is approved, employers will need to provide CPISC with copies of: employment start date; (letter of offer or employment contract); an agreed learning plan; monthly activity reports for the approved employee along with an invoice and proof of payment (wage and benefits).
Which potential employees are eligible?
To be subsidized under the CPISC Career Focus program, potential employees must be:
>> aged between 15 and 30 years (inclusive) at the time of employment or selection
>> a post-secondary graduate and out of school
>> a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person who has been granted refugee status in Canada, and legally entitled to work in Canada
>> not receiving employment insurance (EI) benefits during the period of employment
What subsidy will I receive?
Employers can receive a wage subsidy of up to $13,750 per employee, where this amount can represent one half of the total wage. Employers pay $1 of the new graduate’s salary for every $1 received. The period of benefit is for a minimum of 4 months and for a maximum of 8 months. The subsidy is paid in installments throughout the employment period, based on proof of employee payment which must be regularly submitted to CPISC.
Who pays the subsidy?
Career Focus is a federally funded program under Human Resource and Skills Development Canada. Under the program, CPISC acts as recipient sponsor for companies in the Canadian printing and graphic communications sector. As recipient sponsor CPISC manages and administers the program, assesses employers and participants, signs agreements with approved employers and is responsible for overall financial management of the program.

How will my application be assessed?
All applications will be assessed on a first come first served basis. CPISC has funds to support the equivalent of 15 employees. If the CPISC Career Focus program is over-subscribed, CPISC will give priority to those applicants who plan to provide employment opportunities to those groups who are currently under-represented in our industry: women; Aboriginals and new immigrants. All applications will be assessed by a CPISC panel. Those applications that meet the above eligibility criteria and are approved by the panel will then be forwarded to HRSDC to assess the eligibility of potential employees in relation to their current employment status.
Is there anything I can do to increase the chance of my application being approved?
Because all CPISC Career Focus applications will be assessed on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, you should submit your application as soon as possible. Further, if the program is over-subscribed, priority will be given to those applicants who plan to provide employment opportunities to those groups who are currently under-represented in our industry: women; Aboriginals and new immigrants. Attempting to employ a new graduate from one of these groups is another way to increase the chances of success for your application.
What do I do if my application is approved?
Once your application is processed, CPISC will contact you to let you know the outcome of your application.
If your application is approved, CPISC will provide you with details of the next steps. This will include all approved employers signing a Career Focus contract of agreement with CPISC. You will also need to submit monthly activity reports to CPISC. More information about this will be provided once your application is approved.
What if I have more questions?
If you have any further questions that have not been answered above, please contact our CPISC Career Focus program manager, Heather McLaren for more information. Heather can be contacted by email or by calling: 1-888-688-0293.
