HR Trends

“[The] market slowdown has resulted in staff reductions. The nature of work changes constantly, so it’s trying to adapt on a daily basis which can be difficult for the employees”

The recession currently facing Canadians has impacted the day-to-day operations of employers and employees throughout the Printing and Graphic Communications industry. The uncertainty of the market requires employers and employees to continuously adapt to the ever shifting needs of their consumers and the marketplace.

In view of the economic crisis, CPSIC is gathering ‘on the ground’ human resources intelligence for the printing and graphic communications sector. CPISC engages with selected employers quarterly in a very brief survey pertaining to hiring, lay-offs, and investment in training.

The results gathered through the HR trends survey provide ‘real time’ information on the human resource issues impacting the printing and graphic communications industry, further allowing those in the sector to be in a better position to anticipate upcoming changes.

Access to up to date ground-level intelligence will allow CPISC to assist decision makers and governments to affect  public policy in matters such as EI, training and other government assistance initiatives to further support the industry in achieving economic recovery.

April 2010 Trends

Hiring and Recalls
This month 16 percent of employers expect their organization’s hiring or recalls to increase, with an equal number of respondents reporting they expect them to decrease (16%). However, the majority of employers (68%) anticipate their hiring and recalls will remain static over the next month.

Lay-offs
Employers, for the most part, do not expect lay-offs to increase over the next month with 88 percent of employers reporting their lay-offs will remain static.  8 percent of employers from the printing and graphic communications industry anticipate their lay-offs will decrease over the next month. Lay-offs in the first quarter of 2010 appeared to have leveled off with no employers reporting lay-offs however, 4 percent of employers surveyed in April report their lay-offs will increase.

Training
Although 12 percent of respondents will spend more on training in the next month, 16 percent anticipate they will be investing less on training over the next month, than they did in the same month in 2009. The trend towards spending less on training than previous years is potentially significant and speaks to the uncertainty employers in the printing and graphic communications industry are currently experiencing. The majority of respondents (72%) report their training budgets to be on par with the amounts allocated to training in the previous year.

Challenges facing the industry and the human resource implications
