Having difficulty finding the skilled workers you need?
Employers in the Canadian print industry are pressed to find an adequate supply of skilled workers.
To address this need, a comprehensive background paper has been developed to support retention and recruitment in the printing and graphic communications sector.
To fill the gap is critical. The industry is already facing skills shortages in two key areas: operating complex new print machinery, and understanding and leveraging the benefits of new technologies.
To
secure workers with these much needed skills, what’s needed is a shift away from the traditional
word-of-mouth recruitment strategies, towards those that are planned
and targeted at new pools of labour.
The issue paper identifies the factors that drive current and future skills shortages in the industry and reviews recruitment and retention strategies to improve recruitment and retention.
Some strategies to improve skilled
worker recruitment and retention include:
- branding the industry and your company as an attractive employment option
- reaching out to under-represented groups, including making contact with agencies that represent groups such as the disabled or new migrants
- targeting and tracking people with specialized skills by keeping in touch with former employees or establishing active industry networks
- focusing on must-have skills and capabilities when making hiring decisions
