A young Canadian printer - Simon Beauchamp - won bronze in the international WorldSkills competition held in Calgary last week.
Simon was the first Canadian printer to participate in a WorldSkills competition, thanks to support from the Canadian Printing Industries Sector Council (CPISC).
CPISC, in collaboration with Skills/Compétences Canada and Heidelberg Canada, held the first WorldSkills national selection event for printing last year to ensure Canadian printing had a presence at this international skills event.
WorldSkills is essentially the Olympics for skilled trades and technology, and more than 900 competitors from 50 countries participated in the Calgary event during the past week.
Competitions were held in trades as diverse as hairdressing, floristry, web
design, mechatronics, plumbing, aircraft
maintenance and offset printing.
Simon was one of 38 Team Canada members to compete at Calgary, and was one of the eight team members who took home a medal after the week of competition.
CPISC also hosted a booth as part of the World Skills village which was visited by an estimated 150,000 people over the week, including large numbers of school students who came to learn about careers in trades, including printing.
CPISC hopes to continue to support young Canadian printers to participate in future WorldSkills events and is working with Skills/Compétences Canada and industry to see this happen.
